"3rd. Pole" - A Composition Performed via Gestural Cues
نویسنده
چکیده
3. Pole” is a musical composition that is performed by a dancer, on a specially designed interface (instrument), based on motion tracking technology. This paper introduces the technical and artistic ideas behind the composition and outlines some of the main conceptual tendencies of my earlier work [8]. Several independent components like choreography, instrument design, sound design, formal concepts, etc. were in parallel development throughout the last three years, and came together in this piece. Some of those were already realized in individual projects and are joined now under a new concept of interdependence. A major component of this project however was the implementation of a real-time gesture follower / gesture recognition algorithm applied to full-body motion data. This should be considered as an autonomous module, not allied to this particular project exclusively. Therefore it can be treated and developed independently – as a multi-purpose data mapping strategy – for it has the potential to find further use in any kind of interactive (dance, music, theatre, etc.) performance scenario.

Intonation and gesture as bootstrapping devices in speaker uncertainty
This study investigates 3to 5-year-old children’s sensitivity to lexical, intonational and gestural information in the comprehension of speaker uncertainty. Most previous studies on children’s understanding of speaker certainty and uncertainty across languages have focused on the comprehension of lexical markers, and little is known about the potential facilitation effects of intonational and g...
متن کاملBackchannels revisited from a multimodal perspective
In this study, we analyze the role of several linguistic cues (prosodic units, pitch contours, discourse markers, morphological categories, and gaze direction) in French turntaking face-to-face interactions. Specifically, we investigate vocal and gestural backchannel signals (BCs) produced by a recipient to show his active listening. We show that some particular pitch contours and discursive ma...
متن کاملAn Empirical Analysis of Team Coordination Behaviors and Action Planning With Application to Human-Robot Teaming
OBJECTIVE We conducted an empirical analysis of human teamwork to investigate the ways teammates incorporate coordination behaviors, including verbal and nonverbal cues, into their action planning. BACKGROUND In space, military, aviation, and medical industries, teams of people effectively coordinate to perform complex tasks under stress induced by uncertainty, ambiguity, and time pressure. A...
متن کاملIs the listener really listening? Exploring the effect of verbal and gestural speaker cues on backchanneling
It is well known that listeners of probably all languages give verbal and non-verbal signals, called backchannels, to their interlocutors. However, it is not well understood what drives listeners to backchannel. To what degree are they an indicator of listener attention? Are backchannels semantically motivated, performed when the message has been parsed and comprehended? Or are they automatic r...
متن کاملAvian orientation at steep angles of inclination: experiments with migratory white-crowned sparrows at the magnetic North Pole.
The Earth's magnetic field and celestial cues provide animals with compass information during migration. Inherited magnetic compass courses are selected based on the angle of inclination, making it difficult to orient in the near vertical fields found at high geomagnetic latitudes. Orientation cage experiments were performed at different sites in high Arctic Canada with adult and young white-cr...
